Seeing as we’re well into baseball season, I’d like to bring up the example of the winningest team in modern baseball history: the 1998 New York Yankees. Including the playoffs, they won an astounding 125 times out of 175 games including a 4-0 sweep in the World Series.

If you’re not all that interested in or familiar with baseball, take it from me that this is in fact very special. Time magazine that year declared that they were the greatest team ever (their emphasis). Aside from all the wins, what was almost as remarkable about this team was the fact that, except for Derek Jeter (and maybe Mariano Rivera), you probably never heard of any of the other players. 

You often hear the cliché that sometimes “the whole is greater than the sum of the parts”. The 1998 Yankees were a great example of this, and there is no doubt that there are many other examples of this phenomenon in sports. Take David Beckham coming to the US to play soccer and lighting up the MLS with enthusiasm and charisma. Lionel Messi, arguably the best soccer player in the world, coming to Miami (via Beckham) could yield similar results. 

Sometimes things are just better together because of some magic chemistry or some unknowable set of intangibles. And this “better together” thing doesn’t just apply to sports; there’s a tech angle here too (of course!)
